But most militaries, especially in NATO, have essentially a standardized structure, and have for decades. In WWII, a division was pretty much a division, although I think Russian divisions were slightly less in strength, but they had an aweful lot of them. For instance, a division is usually around the 15,000 mark, give or take a few thousand. So for Canada, with a regular force of 55,000 total - army, navy and air force, but not counting reserves, you can see why the air force can make up essentially just one division. It also has to do with Canada being entirely integrated with its military. The people who fly helicopters are air force, period, whether they do it for air duties, flying soldiers, or hunting subs off a destroyer. And they are all within the same chain of command. The US has chopper pilots for air force, army, marines and navy - all separate regimens. Army pilots, for instance, are usually warrant officers, wheras air force, navy and marines are usually officers, I believe. The rank structure between Canada and the US is almost identical in the officer corps, with slight changes in the enlisted. The navy is the biggest difference. Our acting sublieutenant = US ensign, sublieutenant=US Lt. Junior grade, commodore = US rear admiral (lower half). In the army and air force, enlisted ranks are pretty different. The US air force a while back got rid of the rank of corporal, and has a whole schwack of sgts. The Canadian Forces, army and air force, is: private corporal master corporal sergeant warrant officer master warrant officer chief warrant officer. Seven canadian pay grades = around 11-12 US pay grades in the enlisted corps. They just keep adding stripes. You military or ex? Zinchuk
