(I assume it's US$ you're talking about? There are people living outside the U.S. reading these groups you know, such as myself :-) Anyway, with the TX-16W only a few drives would work, but a member of the TX-16W mailing list successfully replaced it with one of these without buying from Yamaha. Here in Norway I think a standard PC type floppy disk drive costs around the equivelant of US$ 15-20 or something, so US$ 165 is crazy!!! Here's the message from the mailing list which explains how to replace the drive inside a TX-16W. Perhaps some of it is usefull for your SY-99 (I find it hard to believe that Yamaha has used all sorts of different drives for their products, and if I recall correctly, the SY-99 and TX-16W were both available at the same time, I think.... so you might be in luck: ---------------------------- start --------------------------- Here my TX floppy replacement story: Never had any problems with disks writen and read only on the TX. But also never could read a disk from the TX with my PC and vice versa. Solution: -Old Toshiba TX drive as 2nd floppy in my PC (it works!) to read my dozendes of old sounds. -New TEAC drive into the TX for all new sounds and data transfer to/from PC and with others. Diagnosis: -Old Toshiba TX drive has bad read/write head tracking, leading to errors with floppies from other drives and finally with its own disks. - This Tosh drive is absolutely discontinued, not even data sheets are avail. to research institutions. I tried everything! Remedy: The following TEAC drives should work: (old ones top, newer ones bottom): FD235F-3XXX FD235HF-3XXX FD-235HF-6391 FD-235HF-65XX FD-235HF-75XX FD-235HF-A529 -A540 -A591 Of course I have not tested all, I only own/test/use a FD-535HF-3217 working perfectly. The others should be compatible as I saw in the data sheets: http://www.teac.com/dsp/pdf/3fd0020a.pdf http://www.teac.com/dsp/pdf/3fd0050a.pdf ------------------------------------------------- NOTE: The link to TEAC floppy specs was broken. Please look at: TEAC Homepage -> Data Storage Products -> Support Look then for drives: FD235F-3XXX FD235HF-3XXX FD-235HF-6391 FD-235HF-65XX FD-235HF-75XX FD-235HF-A529 -A540 -A591 Currently (May 2001) that could be found here: http://www.teac.com/DSPD/catalog.htm --------------------------------------------- The point is: These are NOT standart PC/AT-drives! The mentioned drives are industry grade drives with flexible jumper ("straps") options. They MUST have the following straps set: DS0: disk select zero, the TX wants it so ... HA: automatic detection if DD or HD floppy is inserted. ONLY 720K will work ;-(, HD disks have to be taped. DC2: disk change at pin two of the ribbon cable: the most severe difference to standart AT drives! Optional straps: REN: auto-recalibration enabled, well sounds good, works until now ... FG: Connects floppy chasis ground with electrical ground of ribbon cable, no problems until now, too... Please check power supply requirements (5V/12V) with specs and with voltmeter inside the TX! You may have to solder an adaptor cable. Where to get the drives: Well, I got mine from a local newsgroup-posting at the university for 5$ from an old CNC-robot. (The full truth is: It was the 8th different drive I tested before I checked what is going one...) So there is a chance to get such drives very cheap. The drives FD-235HF-A529/ -540 / -A591 should be new ones avail. for moderate prices at TEAC distributors. Contact your PC dealer! Hope that helps and I have not forgotten anything. I also are not responsible to any damage that may result from the floppy replacement. Insert here all paragraphs that can be found on U.S. manuals/instructions! ---------------------- end ---------------------------------- By the way, I've replaced my 720 Kbyte (DD) disk drive in my Atari ST with a 1.44 Mbyte (HD) type, using a standard PC type drive. All I had to do were a few simple modifications, so for all I know you might be able to work something similar out on your SY-99. The Atari ST uses a 720 Kbyte drive too, but the 1.44 Mbyte drive worked fine -it's only that I'm not taking full advantage of the capacity. I believe the same could be applicable to your synth as it's hard (and expensive) to get hold of 720 Kbyte drives these days.
